Its unlikely that this formulation (in the 1990&#039;s) was in response to scientific research on play, but rather was independently proposed based on intuitions derived from keen but ultimately anecdotal observation (a comparatively fallible form of knowledge acquisition, but in this case, happily convergent with experimental results.)
